The landscape suddenly fell away.

Possibly a beaver dam. We didn't see any beavers though.

Looking back at the road just driven.

After leaving the Moab area we had planned to stay near Capitol Reef National Park next. Unfortunately it turned out to be difficult to find a campsite close by. The park visitor centre recommended some National Forest spots nearby but all turned out to be closed for the season. At this point we decided to give up and move on and eventually found a spot in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

This monument is massive and contains some of the most remote land in the entire country. Donald Trump was responsible for shrinking the monument by half but this was later rectified. Grand Staircase refers to the layers of rock that step down from Bryce Canyon in the north towards the Grand Canyon in the south.

Most of the monument isn't very accessible to RVs so we could only really explore the edge. It's another region full of vast and varied landscapes with very few people. It was a shame to miss Capitol Reef but there's always next time.
